CONG PENG 彭聪
B.1996.
Works spans oil painting, installation, and video.
Currently pursuing an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in London.
His practice revolves around one question: in what form do bodily experiences that cannot fully enter the interior leave their traces in the world.
As a queer, Cong is concerned with how the body becomes legible through desire, looking, and naming, and how it is compressed into types, roles, and signals. Monuments, public structures, and queer spaces that temporarily emerge at night serve as structural models in his thinking: they not only organize viewing, but also produce an inside and an outside, determining what can be accommodated and what can only remain on the surface. In his work, the surface of the body and the surface of the monument are never far apart.
In painting, he uses layering, covering, erasure, and more relief-like surface treatments to turn the picture into an interface that bears the gaze, accumulates contact, and retains traces of desire. His work seeks to preserve the instability within queer experience, between wanting to enter and being unable to remain, between surface and interior, between desire and love.
