CONG PENG

B.1996.

Works spans oil painting, installation, and video.

Currently pursuing an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in London.

My practice revolves around the tension between the body and the larger systems that move it. I often work within a sense of weightlessness — a state where personal experience is pushed forward by forces beyond my scale, yet where I try to reclaim the immediacy of my own physical response.

The body is my primary entry into the image. I paint figures whose faces dissolve into surfaces, folds, joints and traces of pressure. These scenes sit in a suspended moment: touch is about to happen, or has just ended. Muscles, breath and gravity are enlarged or distorted, creating a terrain where intimacy and distance, care and harm briefly coexist before becoming narrative.

I treat the body as part of a wider field — a back as a ridge, skin as a cloud map, flesh as shifting water. This movement between scales echoes the “overview effect,” where individual experience overlaps with the condition of the whole. Systemic forces return to the image as arrows, numbers and diagram-like marks. They do not explain; instead, they acknowledge the invisible structures that grade, measure and classify us.

Through slow processes of layering, erasing and repainting, each work becomes a record of decision and revision. Painting allows me to hold two positions at once: to inhabit the vulnerability of the body, and to observe from a distance the vast, opaque systems that shape it.
